My favorite corners (living /dining room)

Since I am such a slacker I will probably NEVER EVER catch up I am going to share snippets of our home, my favorite corners.
Some are completely done, some still need some work (and by all means if you have ideas on how to improve or what to add or take away feel free to comment) I promise I won't mind.

I will try to do major updates as a seperate post but also add little snippets when I want to share a little something I have done.

Well better start now.....................

I will take you on a quick tour starting from the entrance.
We have one long room (which is a combo living/dining room) for quite a while we have had just the dining room and a empty spot....................but now
We have a couch and a table and a rug (this is the view when you walk into the house). The corner chair will be replaced at some point with a smaller one, but for now it will stay (without anything in the corner the room looked wierd, we tried).
We want to put something in that right hand corner (sidetable, lamp etc) and probably womething along that wall too).
All in due time (we have to pay this baby off first.....................any takers?)

Any who the next room is our "formal" dining room. The one that we use only a few time a year..........

Behind it is our buffet table, and here's a close-up of what's on it, family pictures and shiloettes I made for Rob for Xmas of the boys:

One last picture the wall opposite the "living" room. I love this little table (but hate the BIG BLANK WALL above it) . Any ideas (I have a few but haven't found what I am looking for), anywho here it is..............

I made little vingettes (is that how you spell that?), those tall glass canisters are filled with rocks, glass marbles and shells (from our visits to the Outer Banks) and the pictures around them were taken there as well. I also add words of "inspiration" (that I change about every 2-3 weeks)

On the other side I put my favorite frames with pictures of my favorite "guys" (if you can see they are pictures of the boys when they were younger and then some recent ones) and also some of Rob with the boys (when they were younger and then some more recent sorry for the flash I took these at night and needed the light).................

I am really liking how this part if the house is turning out. We still have lots to go and it might take a while and even though sometimes I get frustrated I am still enjoying the journey.

I hope you stick with me and continue the journey though our home, next up our back yard...............

Yard Work!

Ok since we have been working on the outside of thehouse now that the weather is so nice I am going to lump together our work from the last 2 or 3 weekends.

Here is what we started with (it's ok just a little plain jane)
This is the "flower bed" right next to the door (sorry I guess this is the best picture I have of the before):

This is the little patch that sits in the very front (right next to the sidewalk) to the right of the above picture, were the waterworks are (YUCK) I hate this spot (every house in the subdivision has it)

So we decided to go hunting for stone that would look well with our stone front and finally found some we loved at Homedepot (by the way this weekend May 24th, some people from the neighborhood asked where we had found it that it looked beautiful). I agree but let me share and you tell me................

We started by raising the flowerbed:
Here is a closer look at the NEW flowerbed

Then we pulled out the UGLY redish bushes and went flower shopping.
These pictures show you what we added:
AHHHHHHHH much better, yeah they are small now, but it's only the begining of Spring and I am sure they will do well (at least I hope they do)

We also fixed up the spot up front where the water-works are and I love it!!!!!!
See for yourself I think you might like it too!
We will still need to find something to edge it with but it does a pretty good job of hiding those pipes.

Well kind of..............
I don't know if I shared this with you but one of the rooms in our house is now my "CRAFT ROOM/guest room). How do you say? Well let me show you .................

I do have to show you the embarrasing amount of "stuff" I have and why I need a whole room just to myself.................
and believe it or not (I am crafty.............well at least I like to make crafts and needed to organize my stuff)
We decided the only way to not lose a guest room (one of the reasons we got a bigger house is because we love having the whole family for holidays , especially Xmas and HATE sending them off to a hotel.................) was to find a way to fit a BED and a CRAFT room together.

HOW? With all the stuff I had to store? Can you Guess?
A MURPHEY BED!!!!!!!!!!! Yep a hide-away bed that disapears and leaves me with a nice sized home office, craft room (GETAWAY) .................

I looked around a lot and compared prices and attitudes & trust me it makes a difference, because I needed a lot of storage and am very picky.................

Anywho I went with Closet Factory,met the nicest person Suzanne that put up with all my questions and specifications and wading though all my mess to get the measurments "just right".

It took about 5 weeks for them to finally be able to come and install, but once they were here it only took a couple of days, see below for a few pictures of the install:

This will be my desk and it is surrounded by shelves (for all my books of course)

On the other side of the window there was a little nook (we took advantage and made some shelves and storage for my machines)
That black metal thing you see in the above picture is a bed (or will be) it's the Murphy bed I mentioned before (all we need is a mattress)
If you turn around you can see the closet (filled with shelves of course) and a little hanging room (for our guests)

Here's a little look of the finished product:

My desk all finished up. Now all I have to do is fill up those shelves.................

That's the little nook with the specially made pull-out shelves (holds all my machines: sewing, serger,Cricut & Xyron)
And then we have the wall with the Murphy bed. I think It looks quite nice and when it's closed the room has enough space to put a small working table in the middle.

For now that's all I have. Mom's comming soon and she will be helping me arrange all (or most of) my stuff, she has quite a small room but it all organized so I ca't wait for her input.
I will show you the progress as I add all the details and store all my stuff.....................

A little tour

I just realized that since we moved in I haven't really shared the little snippets of our home.
We still have lots to buy, decorate............but I can show you little bits..............

My kitchen (it's one of my favorites not because I love to cook, just because I love the way it turned out), it's almost finished.
I say it's almost done because we want to get a couple of bar stools, so the boys can eat or do homework at the island, we also want to change our "old" table (still debating if we want a NEW one or if we sand and paint/stain this one, I think we will try this first, not sure what combination though).

HMMMMMMM what else can I share....

Not my favorite but definatly the boys (their computer area), unfortunatly we have tried more than once to buy desks but the ones we found were a little to large and haven't really found any we really like, so for the moment (get ready to cringe) we have a FOLDOUT table OY! (It will be changed when we find something that works better and well looks better)

You can see they love it!

Let see if I turn around from the kitchen we have our family room. When we got the OLD house ready for sale we bought a new sofa (to be put in this room and it fits perfectly).
Yeah that's a BIG TV on the wall, that was Rob's housewarming present (I promised we would get one as soon as we had a bigger house, and guess what I kept my promise and love it too)

As you can see it's still pretty sparse (we are trying to be mindful of what we purchase), it may take us a while but when we get stuff we want to make sure we LOVE it.

For now that's all I am showing (it's just Febuary so we've only been here 4 months).

WE have SNOW!

The first snow at the new house. It looks so beautiful (mainly because we have no other houses surrounding us) so there was a blanket of white stretching all around the house.
No home improvements I just wanted to share ................

This was 1st thing in the morning (I actually snuck out, in my PJ's)

Do you see those wave at the roofline?

Here's a closeup (isn't that cool)

I guess they formed because it was windy and we have no barrier so the wind blew the snow on the roof like waves...................

This is the backyard (I say about 6 inches) .

I love how snow make everything look clean and fresh and beautiful...................

HAHAHAHA!
Ok so Despite the fact that we have a bigger house we have lots of "Stuff" and not much built in storage.
So what is one to do? Well build some overhead garage storage.......................yep you heard it right.
Rob has spent 2 of the last weekends building storage in the garage (that is small even though the rest of the house is big ? (weird)

Even though I haven't posted about most of the other stuff we've done and the holidays were here (I posted about that in my other blog) I have to share the fruits of Rob's work..........

We will be putting all our Christmas stuff up here (I know we have the attic, but these boxes are SUPER heavy and the attic door in smallish and only Rob and myself to unload them...............trust me it can be dangerous..............)

Martha Stewart!

HAHAHAHA! We came home to find a package at our front door and from who? Martha Stewart! Keep in mind our subdivision is one of the many she "designed" in collaboration with KB so our housewarming gift was a book and some other goodies from her.

Cool eh? I just wish it was signed or something (haha just joking! I have been wanting this book forever and I love it)

At some point during the "moving" day while waiting for the movers Rob managed to "escape" and when he retured he brought home a 52"fla screen tv (OH YEAH!!)

No there are no stripes on the wall (it's just the picture angle and no blinds).
Well I just thought I should share his pride and joy (other than us of course)

What can I say WELCOME HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Again what can I say, we are still in moving and unpacking mode............we still are moving stuff out of the apartment and little by little unpacking and settling into out home.

Seems like eveyone is fiding new spots to call home................

I figured out that in this house I can set up my cabinets into specific areas and this is the start of my "baking" area (mind you I don't bake, but I intend to learn)
But not all was work we did play too!
We took some time off to catch some fresh air and play outside................

PS I am sure I have and will have more pictures that I will post at some point, just be patient with me, ok?

MOVING DAY!!!!!

It's done.......papers are signed and WE ARE MOVING!!!!!!!!
Finally we are moving in! . The 3 PODS are here

and we have already started unpacking.............this is the dining room (or it will be eventually) full of boxes we unpacked from the PODS yesterday after signing..............

Can't wait to start unpacking (yeah right, wish the boxes would unpack themselves) here are a few shots of our box filled "NEW" house...............

The movers have come and we asked them after all the furniture was in to help us take the BIG boxes upstairs........................

Yeah they put them all in the loft (every single one of them, even a few marked KITCHEN?!?!?!)
But at least the dining room is empty now!

Here's the kitchen (I have so many cabinets I can't even believe it!)

Seems like we have been doing this dance foreverrrrrr!
There are boxes everywhere and I have no idea where anything is.................... but we are home and it feels so good!

That's it for now, we have lot's of stuff to unpack and I am guessing a few rooms are going to take longet than others (like my craft room that I need massive amounts of storage to keep all my treasures................) but slowly, slowly everything will come together.

I am going to bed, as you can imagine we are tired and need the rest to keep on going tommorow.

WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My last post was our final walk though and now we have done it...................

WE CLOSED ON THE HOUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We (Rob and I ) met up at the lawyers office (downtown Raleigh)I don't like driving in downtown Raleigh, almost got myself lost (good thing I had plenty of time). The office was located in a old house (historical,I bet).

We were early so we had to wait, but finally the layer called us in asked us for identification etc, Leah (our loan officer) arrived shortly thereafter and we proceeded to sign our name over and over and over (and never been so happy to do so).

There was a little bit of confusion (I guess they had thought I needed a visa,haha) but it was all cleared up and after about 1 hr we were handed a beautiful set of keys)

We are now the proud owners of a beautiful house and tomorrow we will be moving (by the time I post this..... the pods have already been delivered and Rob has already unpacked the smallest (all by himself almost, I was on the phone arranging to have it picked up) , we have the movers coming at some point and well the circus begins.......................

I have no pictures for this post I just wanted share our good news!

FINAL WALKTHOUGH!!!!

My last post from yesterday mentioned that today as our FINAL WALKTHOUGH!

We met up with Stan (our builder) at about 1:00pm and did just that , we walked though the house making sure everything was finished and looking good.

Our next step is CLOSING..........then moving (out of our "COZY" apartment) and into our NEW house.

I was only able to take a few pictures today and although Stan tried to escape, I managed to snap a few of him too!

Front door painted (see I told you it wouldn't be white............) I love the arch!

Garage doors painted too! Looks good with the color of the house.

Ok it's getting down to the wire we've just been informed that we will be doing our final walkthough with our builder on October 16 and that we have a meeting with the lawyer for the closing on the 23rd..............
Originally the walkthough was around the 21st and closing around the 31st..............so we are about 1 week ahead ..............OY!!!!!!

Just minor things left (like finishing the painting but almost everything else is done)

Here are the stairs (carpet installed, yep another GREEN contribution) It's recyclable and recycled carpet.

Yep carpet there too, covered in plastic(because as you can see they still need to paint the walls)

Here is where the dining room,formal living room meet the family room (the entrance and the before mentioned rooms are wood flooring, it's just covered with cardboard so you can't see it)

Landscaping put in. We will put in more of course...........

Refrigerator! Nice, big and BLACK!

Oven is in too! Of course it's black as well...........

Again it's been 10 days (or so) since my last post, we go visit the house almost everyday (once or twice) but sometimes there is nothing to post about or anything worth taking a picture but I do have some here not a ton but your gonna notice some pretty cool things going on..............

All from the downstairs...........

HURRAY! We have granite countertops (again they are covered with plastic since that still are painting) and see in the back.....a MICROWAVE

Here is a little closer shot of the granite I love the color (it has a mix of light brown like our sofa and some grey speck like the walls will be ). Looks good!

Guest bathroom wood floors , pedestal sink . Nice!

This is our (one of our) GREEN contributions it's a tankless water heater (our house is Energy Star compliant)

Just a little info on that one and why we chose it:

This is my laundry room (you know where it is?) UPSTAIRS ! HURRAY!!!!!! I am painting it yellow (make it a happy spot, since I HATE doing laundry)

Oh my goodness...........it's been about 11 days since my last post (that's a ton of time) but of course that means a lot has changed (I don't have a ton of pictures but that I have are VERY different), see for yourself.............

We have cabinets in the kitchen, they are covered up because they are also painting the ceiling.

I just had to uncover one to show you the color (chocolate brown) I LOVE THEM!

There's a banister on the stairs (it will be stained a darker color).

Yep, it goes all the way up (we might eventually change the white posts for wrought iron, maybe?)

We have a ladder for the attic (dad see this, finally got one) and one more are you ready.......

That's our driveway (stamped concret (how cool is that?)The shape will match the stone that will go in the fron of the house.

Ok that's all I have fornow, come back because I am sure it's gonna start to go fast (since it's a little over a month before we close)OY !!! It's flying by, and we can't wait!

Ok we have been back at the old house packing, packing and packing (we are supposed to have the house empty by September 4th).

In the meantime they have been working pretty hard we have siding up and all the walls have Sheetrock up(is that how you say that???).

YIPPI! The siding is up!!!!!!!!!!!!and it's not vinyl, it's HARDIPLANK (kinda like concrete as I understand) BETTER?! Looks good!

See? That's the garage (no exposed beams ma!) Now all I have to do is convince Rob to paint it (hahaha)

That in the back is Rob's office/den and I just had to take that picture because I love how Patrick's silhouette looks.

That's the hall closet (it's pretty big, maybe it should be a room.....................)

Last post was the rolls of insulation sitting in the garage. In the meantime mom and dad (Otanez) came to visit (AKA help us pack)and we gave them thegrand tour of the house (they liked it alot), we didn't take a whole lot of pictures that day (busy talking about what will go where and how much we will have to get to fill the space)but I got a few and here they are.

WOW! It's pretty incredible how fast this house is going up. I guess our last house took about the same time and it went just as fast but I wasn't blogging about it, so I don't know........

IT'S POURING...............CONCRETE

Yep they have finally started poring the concrete, it took a few days because we had some rain and they had to wait, but here they are pouring concrete, making sure it's level etc.

Not too many pictures here (I mean how many pictures can you take of the concrete and workers, right?), besides I didn't want to make them uncomfortable snapping pictures......

PREPPING FOR CONCRETE

Like I said in my last post we should have a pretty consistent stream from now on , these pictures show the preparations to pour the concrete foundations (hurray!)
I am starting to see how the house is going to fit here, even without the walls.

See back there no more dirt, they have placed the plastic barrier and are ready to pour the concrete.

NOTE ADDED: Here we discovered that the front of the house would be a little different that what we thought (we had a misunderstanding with our sales agent, went to talk to her and got it cleared) and although it's different than what we thought (no little porch) I really think we are going to like it...................

CLEARING A SPOT

Ok so there is a gap (of about 1 month) between my last post and this one and no I didn't forget I had this blog .............this is about the amount of time they had told us it would take before anything would happen (they need to file permits and such and well that takes time).

Around the 21 we went and bought a house, the previous house we had liked (kinda fell though) we justcouldn't arrive at a price we were comfortable with, so we went to the only other lots /houses we liked and well.......made a offer and YEP............bought the house.

I will try to start with pictures from the very start all the way through the construction and eventually the move and the settling in (that will of course include decorating)
